Koyan the barbarian

Nikon D70

Just because I am jealous of  Bruno and his new camera, I borrowed today the Nikon d70 from a friend who just bought it.
I took that picture of stella 🙂

dsc_0431

and that one of  the owner of the camera

petros-cosy

I know they are not the ART pictures of the century, but I haven’t taken a picture that I like for long time now, and taking even those 2 nice (even without artistic value) portraits feels GOOD.
And for sure it felt good taking 100 pictures without caring for films etc etc 🙂

I WANT A CAMERA LIKE THAT TOO 🙂

(update 2010 – the original picture of Stella was one she didn’t like now, so instead we uploaded another picture of Stella and Ioanna)

Stella’s first live site

Stella uploaded yesterday her first site for which she will get money!!!
http://www.lightkissfm.gr/ (update 2010 – this site no longer exists and if you do find it, it is not the one we made)

It is for a radio station, and the aggreement with them is that they “push” their existing radio-advertised customers to make a website (which we will make of course).
Lets see…. 🙂

House Designs

Last Friday (19th) we got the first designs for the house from the architect. We have been thinking over them,  over and over since then. I believe that what annoys us most, is that the house is too big. Bigger than what we want. We are going to tell him today.

Strange thing 1. We go to architects, because they have a better understanding of how a house should be built. But then we don’t’ like what he tells us, so we tell him how to design our house. And he does. Why do we go there in first place?

Strange thing 2. Our architect says that usually his clients complain that the designs he first proposes to them are for too small houses. So he makes them bigger than his first ideas. With us it is the opposite.

In some strange way, we are trying to convince him that what we ask from him, is what we REALLY want.  Will tell you more about how difficult it is to build an energy saving house…

Social insurance. Greece

For the last 2 months I have a small problem with my knee.

They (doctors, Greek social insurance, divine intervention) are not going to cut the leg off as someone would expect, but they (Greek social insurance) have found a new way to solve the social insurance problems in Greece.

I first visited the doctor at the beginning of October. He gave me some exercise to be doing. He told me that if it doesn’t get better with the exercise, then I should go see him again. I went again today, and he told me that we have to do some examinations. He told me to do a ultrasonic to my knee, so that we check if there is something there.
All good. The strange thing: The appointment for the examination is in 1 month. 1 month. 14 of December.

Do you hear that all of you users that you request something and I solve it for you the next day?
1 month for a doctors exam.

I will be forwarding to this post everyone who pushes me for quick solutions.

1 freaking month.

Radio

Several things concerning radio:

1) Stella is making a website for a radio station. She decided to base it on phpNuke, given that they wanted a lot of the functionality that is already there. For small scale projects, phpNuke rocks. More on that when she puts it online

2) Two friends of ours have taken the management of a radio station here in Kalamata. They even have 2 broadcasts they do themselves.

3) We managed to listen to our favorite Athens station over the net. Actually they were online for quite some time, but for some strange reason, our firewall was keep on blocking it. Now we do have it.

The above, with the fact that Petros has a 2 hours radio show everyday at 12, makes it that we have a full program:

8:00-10:00 Christos Michailides at Diesi (over the internet: http://www.e-radio.gr/player/playerWM.asp?id=117 )
10:00 – 12:00 Margarita Mitilinaiou (deftero programma)
12:00 – 14:00 Petros (light kiss fm – Kalamata)
14:00 – 16:00 Mpeti Skia (Best fm – Kalamata)
16:00 – 18:00 Kostas Sgantzos (Best fm -Kalamata)

So now we have 10 hours of radio program we like. It is like they all planned it for us 🙂

UPDATE: after having worked with phpNuke we now say that it sucks, but for then it was ok. (this from Stella 2010)

A new board

After having not been in the workshop for more than 3 months, I spent 3 hours Saturday morning working on a new skeleton for a backgammon board.
This time I started with walnut wood. Much more expensive than everything I have worked with till now, I am really scared not to damage the pieces. My father looks at me and laughs, throwing comments like “if other carpenters saw me giving you that gold, they would say ‘what do you do'”. Well, it felt very very good.
Only thing that troubles me: I want to make the joints not to be visible. There are some joints called “secret joints” which are not visible, but my father says that you need heavy and expensive machinery to do them, and no one in Kalamata has it. Another solution would be to use bronze externally instead of joints to make it stable. I have yet to find out if someone sells bronze sheets at Kalamata and/or if someone works with them.

I am looking now on different shades of veneers to start doing the inside. I have a design in my mind, but I will need 4 different shades of veneer, from as closer to white, to as closer to black.

Its GOOD to make something out of wood.

First Day of Winter

Well, strange:
It is the first time that I listen to people wanting the winter to come.
This long summer has started getting on peoples nerves.

It is the beginning of November, and it seems that today is the first day of the winder.
Till yesterday people were going swimming.
Yesterday on the radio, Petros was saying “we bought new autumn and winter clothes, and we want to show them off”. Well, Petros, here is your day.

It is cloudy and too windy. But TOO windy, and today we DON’T want to go out for coffee.
We will make tea 🙂 and sit inside from the window, looking peoples laundry flying around.

“Heads In”

The joke bellow does NOT apply to us 🙂

Once someone died, and like most of us will, he ended up in hell. When he crossed the gates, a little guide-devil took him in a “sighting tour” to show him around. He was told that he would have a choice of the room he would like to spend eternity.
So he took him to the various rooms. There was the room with the torturing, the room with no food, the room of fire, and I guess a lot of other terrible places. And there was that room which has a big pool full of mud and other things that I don’t want to say right now. A lot of people were inside the mud, only their heads out of it.
So the little man said “this looks like the less bad place, this is the one I want to spent eternity in”. And the little devil gave him a push, and there he was in the pool.
So, when he was settled a big devil came in the room with a whip and shouted. “Ok, the brake is over, Heads In”.

This does not apply to us for the following reasons: Athens was the brake, and I am damn happy that it ended. I feel like I am back to civilization. Back to quick internet (I have here an ADSL) while on the place we stay in Athens we don’t’). Back to good food (we control much better what we eat at our own house). Back to “less hours driving” (the biggest distance here is 5 minutes away).
And anyway, there is no place like 127.0.0.1
So in my case, the pit is the good thing, and I love it, and the brake was the one I didn’t like (except for the hours we spent out with Antreas, and the times we spent at Dimitris place). Friends are what makes even Athens good.

Be well,

Scientific reports

Well, I dissagree with a LOT of them.
I translate from a greek newspaper: “Research on 3000 people, showed that the people who drink 2 or more cups of coffee per day, have a 70 % bigger chance of getting heart related diseases. The report was condacted on 2 groups of 1500 people. The people of the first group are drinking 1 or none cup of coffee, while the other group drinks 2 or more cups of coffee per day”.

Well, BOLLOCKS.
One of the first things that taught us in science was that experiments have to be contacted “ceteris paribus”  (latin for: “with other things equal”).  Believing in this, I would accept the above report ONLY if the 2 groups of people were from parallel universes, and the rest of their lives were EXACTLY the same.
A usual thing that makes me furious about those kind of “scientific” reports:
They check a number of people for the variable A and the variable B. So a lot of times they come to the conclusion that A is related to B, with a cause-effect relationship. BOLLOCKS.
They never think that A and B could be results from C. And some times it is damn obvious.

Example (not obvious, but still, who can tell me that it is not a possibility):  People who drink more than one coffee per day, are people that for the same reasons (9 to 5 worktime for example)  don’t eat normal lunch, spend too many hours in offices, and eat junk food. Junk food is the reason for the heart diseases.
So, drinking 2 coffees doesn’t’ mean that you have more chances of getting a heart related problem. But having a life style that usually goes with drinking 2 coffees DOES.
So drinking 2 coffees, AND heart diseases are both results of the same cause: Bad lifestyle.
They are not necessarily cause and effect.
